About Fine Options

An option built around
community service.

Fine Options gives eligible participants a way to settle court-assessed fines by completing community service with approved organizations.

A program of the John Howard Society of Saskatchewan.

The program connects participants with local placements and helps track eligible community service hours through to settlement.

What the program does

A practical alternative.

Register

Participants register using their notice of fine and surcharge or notice of conviction, before the default date.

Get placed

Fine Options works with approved community organizations and helps participants connect with a suitable placement.

Complete hours

Community service hours are recorded by the placement organization and applied toward the eligible fine balance.

Settle the fine

Once the required hours are verified, Fine Options completes the settlement process with the appropriate court.

$15.70

The current Saskatchewan minimum wage used to calculate hours.

The person who received the fine. The program does not apply to companies or corporations.

Who it serves

Designed for people navigating eligible fines.

The court determines whether a fine is eligible. Fine Options then helps with registration, placement and tracking.

  • Adults assessed by the court may be eligible.
  • Youth under 18 may work off eligible provincial or municipal fines, but not Criminal Code or federal fines.
  • Saskatchewan has agreements with Alberta and Manitoba that allow some out-of-province fines to be worked off.
  • Participants can name preferred partner agencies when they register. Placement depends on availability and each agency’s requirements.
